Day 14 in Napa
Day 14 in Napa greeted us with yet another stunning morning in wine country. The cool mid-fifties temperature, the marine layer, and the comforting warmth of the fireplace set the stage for a day filled with new adventures and unforgettable experiences. As we enjoyed our morning coffee, we couldn't help but feel a little hungover!
Our group, consisting of Barringer's, Larkin's, Longs, Mike & Helen, loaded into our now famous SoNapa Van. Today's destination was the picturesque Suisun Valley, where we had arranged a tasting and tour at the esteemed Caymus Suisun winery. I opted to take the scenic route over the mountains which was exciting and scary with awesome views. However, road construction and a small fire spanning 18 acres caused a slight delay.
Nonetheless, we arrived at Caymus Suisun, albeit 30 minutes later than our scheduled tour. To our disappointment, we were informed that our slot had been filled by a walk-in guest. But fear not, for fate had a plan. Andrew, our charming host from Caymus the day before, happened to be working at the new facility and came to our rescue. Alongside his fellow winery employee David, they welcomed us, ensuring that our visit would still be a fantastic.
At Caymus Suisun, we sat outside and thought “damn this is beautiful”. Shannon, Brenda & I opted to drink Caymus Special Select while the rest of the the group opted for the suggested tasting menu, which we enjoyed while snacking on a charcuterie board. David, ever the knowledgeable guide, enlightened us about the unique qualities of the Suisun Valley and the wonders of Petite Syrah’s.
We were astounded by the impeccable hospitality displayed by the Caymus Suisun team, leaving us all feeling grateful for the unexpected turn of events. With our tasting at Caymus Suisun being the only winery visit of the day, we made our way back to the villa around 3pm, allowing ourselves some leisurely free time before our highly anticipated reservation at the world-renowned French Laundry at 5:30pm.
Uber rides to Yountville and the French Laundry! Stepping into the restaurant, we were immediately greeted by an air of elegance and sophistication. The nine-course dinner menu promised to be a culinary journey like no other. And as if on cue, we were astonished to receive a greeting from none other than Chef Thomas Keller himself. It was a moment that filled us with awe and excitement, knowing that we were about to embark on a dining experience of a lifetime.
Half of our table opted for the sommelier's recommended wine tasting menu, while the other half chose to indulge in the exquisite Vine Cliff Cabernet. The flavors of each dish was a work of art meticulously crafted to perfection. The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the tour of the wine cellar and the kitchen, both of which exuded an unparalleled level of precision and excellence. The entire experience, from start to finish, took us on a five-hour journey of gastronomic bliss.
